Portview’s Skin Cancer and Dermatology Screening Clinic

Crowned in this category by the judges for its “strong alignment to industry needs, expert-led delivery and a clear preventative focus combining clinical and behavioural support,” fit-out company Portview launched its Skin Cancer and Dermatology Screening Clinic in 2023 after recognising the unique challenges faced by construction workers: sun exposure and limited access to healthcare.

Although construction represents only 8 per cent of the UK workforce, according to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, it accounts for 44 per cent of occupational skin cancer cases, and internal insight only reinforces this risk. Employee feedback and absence trends found limited access to preventative healthcare and low engagement with external screening services, confirming the need for an accessible, onsite solution. It was clear that a traditional, reactive approach to occupational health wouldn’t work.

Instead, the clinic is delivered across Belfast HQ and regional UK sites through a structured, employee-centred model, led by in-house occupational health and wellbeing clinical lead Norma McKibbin. The clinic provides 45 to 60-minute consultations for nearly 40 employees annually, offering proactive screening, personalised education and early detection of pre-cancerous conditions.

By bringing specialist care directly onsite, ensuring confidentiality and positioning the service as convenient and supportive, the clinic has overcome key challenges including workforce mobility, limited healthcare access and stigma. Since 2023, the clinic has operated at 100 per cent capacity with a waiting list. A quarter, 24 per cent, of attendees required onward referral for pre-cancerous conditions, and 72 per cent reported positive behavioural change, including improved sun protection. “They made me feel at ease and very comfortable,” one anonymous participant said. Others said “the assessment exceeded my expectations” and that they “will be more conscious about my skincare moving forward”.

The judges applauded the company’s delivery of clear business value by reducing long-term absence risk, supporting health and safety compliance, and strengthening engagement and retention. “This was a targeted, innovative wellbeing intervention addressing a specific and material occupational health risk,” they said. “The onsite, accessible model effectively removes barriers for a transient workforce, with strong engagement evidenced by full capacity and waiting lists. A really strong, rounded entry.”
